And here's a real monster, a snapping turtle. I have seen those guys quite often but never been close enough to get a decent shot. This time it emerged pretty closely and was looking at me with its small curious eyes. I liked how the the soft light was exposing the details of its wrinkled skin. Snapping turtles can grow up to one meter long. They are not dangerous when not bothered but if they feel in danger, they can easily chop the finger off. They are omnivores but they tend to catch small birds like ducklings or cygnets by pulling them underwater. At the Avalon pond in STony Brook where this shot was taken, every year dozens of ducklings and several cygnets are born. However, only few of them grow up to the full adulthood and the snapping turtles are one of the main reasons for that .
