Profile of dowitcher
Dowitchers are common summer visitors on Long Island but I have never been lukcy to photograph one. This one we met when we visited Cupsogue beach on one summer morning. It was cloudy and humid and you could not see too many birds around. Except this one, wading in a shallow water and digging in the mud. At first I though that it was willet, but soon I realized that it's too small, too stocky and its bil is strangely long. Fortunately it was very cooperative and did not care too muc habout me taking the shots. This way I managed to take several photographs of this beautiful bird. I don't know whether it was a long or short-billed dowitcher since both those species can be found on Long Island and both of them have overlapping bill length, but no matter which species it was, it was a very exciting encounter.
