Merganser in a green water
Common merganser photographed on the Avalon Pond in Stony Brook. While red breasted and hooded mergansers are pretty comon on Long Island especially during winter months, it was the first time when I actually saw a common merganser. This female appeared out of nowhere and spent whole summer in Stony Brook. Although she was a brand new visitor she wasn't afraid of people. At the first glance, she seemed to be reserved, keeping safe distance and not allowing you come too close but it was enough to throw some bread and she was right there catching the crumbs and surpasing all the mallards, geese and seagulls that were swarming on the pond. I was surprised since mergansers usually catch fish and water invertebrates but I have never seen one so interested in the bread.
This beautiful duck spent few months at Avalon and then disappeared . Maybe she returned where she was from? But it was a great opportunity to observe and photograph such an amazing bird
