The last ugly duckling
Juvenile swan swimming in my direction. It was the only cygnet that survived that summer on the Avalon Pond in Stony Brook. All the others were eaten by snapping turtles or big fish. While swans are big and powerful birds they have hard time raising their chicks on Long Island. I guess one of the reasons is that they come originally from Europe so they did not evolve defense mechanisms against underwater predators such as a snapping turtle. Throughout last three years mute swans always have chicks on Avalon Pond and so this was the only one that survived.
