Tricolored herons are not very common birds on Long Island. Throughout my 10 years of being here I have met this bird only three times. This one encounter hapened totally by accident in the Avalon Park in STony Brook. A beautiful tricolored heron was wading on a small lake, catching fish an behaving as it was her usual territory. Additionally it did not seem to pay any attention to my presence. I took out my camera and took this series of pictures. When I came to to this place two hours later the bird was gone. Never before and never after have I seen tricolored heron. I guess I was really lucky that time!
Sanderling posing at seashore near West Meadow Beach. The light wasn't the best but this bird was very cooperative so I could not resist taking some photos. Such a modest bird, yet so colorful in its breeding plumage!
